Dr. Farkhanda Afzal Represents NUST at the 13th Heidelberg Laureate Forum 2026
-September 12 2026 – September 18 2026 : Dr. Farkhanda Afzal participated as an Alumni Guest at the 13th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF 2026) in Heidelberg, Germany.
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum is a distinguished international gathering that brings together outstanding young researchers in mathematics and computer science with recipients of some of the field’s most prestigious international awards, including the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, IMU Abacus Medal, and Nevanlinna Prize. The week-long programme provides a unique platform for scientific exchange, mentoring, interdisciplinary dialogue, and international networking.
A Global Platform for Mathematics and Computer Science
As an HLF alumna, Dr. Afzal joined researchers and alumni from around the world for a programme featuring scientific discussions, workshops, table talks, small-group interactions, and opportunities for informal exchange with leading researchers and laureates.
Her participation reflected her academic interests spanning applied mathematics, mathematical modelling, computational methods, Artificial Intelligence, optimization, and STEM education, while also contributing to broader conversations on the future of science and the role of researchers in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Unconference on “Polycrisis in the Age of AI & Scientific Acceleration”
One of the highlights of the programme was the unconference session on “Polycrisis in the Age of AI & Scientific Acceleration.”
The discussion brought together participants to reflect on the rapidly changing scientific landscape, the accelerating development of Artificial Intelligence, and the complex challenges emerging at the intersection of technology, science, society, and global development.
Dr. Afzal contributed to the dialogue from the perspective of mathematics, computational science, AI, and education, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary thinking in addressing emerging scientific and societal challenges.
Dialogue on Accessibility and Inclusion in Science
Dr. Afzal also participated in a lunch table discussion on “Accessibility and Inclusion in Science.”
The session provided an opportunity for researchers from different backgrounds and disciplines to exchange perspectives on creating more inclusive scientific environments and expanding opportunities for participation in research and innovation.
Workshop: “Beyond Equations: Navigating Work, Family, and Career in STEM”
As part of HLF 2026, Dr. Afzal organized and conducted the workshop “Beyond Equations: Navigating Work, Family, and Career in STEM.”
The workshop focused on the broader dimensions of academic and professional life, encouraging participants to discuss career development, work-life considerations, leadership, and the experiences of researchers pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The interactive format encouraged participants to share experiences, perspectives, and strategies for navigating different stages of academic and professional careers.
Small-Group Interaction with Fields Medalist Yu Deng
Another significant component of the Forum was Dr. Afzal’s participation in a small-group interaction with Fields Medalist Yu Deng.
Such small-group sessions are a distinctive feature of HLF, enabling young researchers and alumni to engage directly with internationally renowned scientists in an informal setting. These interactions facilitate the exchange of ideas, discussion of research journeys, and conversations about the development of mathematics and computer science.
Strengthening Global Academic Engagement
Dr. Afzal’s participation in HLF 2026 provided opportunities to engage with an international community of mathematicians, computer scientists, researchers, educators, and scientific leaders.
The Forum also strengthened the visibility of NUST and SEECS within the global scientific community, while creating opportunities for future academic networking, research collaboration, interdisciplinary engagement, and knowledge exchange.
Through platforms such as HLF, researchers can build connections beyond disciplinary and geographical boundaries and contribute to a wider international research ecosystem.
Encouraging the Next Generation of Researchers
HLF provides a valuable platform for young mathematicians and computer scientists to interact directly with recipients of the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, IMU Abacus Medal, and Nevanlinna Prize, exchange ideas, and develop international scientific networks.
SEECS encourages its faculty members, researchers, and students to actively explore such international opportunities, engage with global research communities, and contribute their expertise to discussions shaping the future of mathematics, computer science, Artificial Intelligence, and scientific innovation.
Dr. Farkhanda Afzal’s participation as an Alumni Guest at HLF 2026 reflects the continuing commitment of SEECS and NUST to international academic engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the advancement of mathematics and computing on global platforms.
