Dr Farkhanda Afzal represented the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad, at the ASEAN Stakeholder Summit on Generative AI for Education 2025, organised by the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) in collaboration with Open University Malaysia (OUM).

The three-day international summit convened senior academics, researchers, policymakers, and global technology leaders from across the ASEAN region and beyond to advance dialogue on the responsible, inclusive, and ethical adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in higher education.

Panel Participation: AI in Teaching and Learning

During the summit, Dr Afzal participated as a panelist in the session titled “AI in Teaching and Learning: Rethinking How We Design Education.” The session provided an international platform to examine the evolving role of artificial intelligence in higher education, with a particular focus on:

  • Inclusive and equitable learning design
  • Ethical and responsible use of AI
  • Human-centred approaches to digital education

Dr Afzal shared the panel with distinguished international experts, including Dr Jeremy Van Hof (Michigan State University, USA) and Dr Hiromichi Katayama (UNESCO Jakarta). The session was moderated by Dr Meera Eeswaran (Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation, Malaysia).

Faculty Development Workshops

As part of her academic engagement at the summit, Dr Farkhanda Afzal also conducted two professional development workshops for faculty members and institutional leaders. The workshops focused on strengthening institutional capacity for the effective and ethical integration of generative AI in higher education.

AI as a Co-Teacher: Reimagining Teaching & Learning with Generative AI
The workshop explored practical pedagogical frameworks for integrating generative AI into teaching and learning, with emphasis on student engagement, personalised learning, and the responsible use of AI in academic contexts.

Smarter Assessment with Generative AI: Adaptive, Formative & Summative Models
This session examined innovative AI-enabled assessment strategies, including adaptive testing, formative feedback systems, and AI-assisted summative assessment design, highlighting approaches to enhance learning outcomes while maintaining academic integrity.

International Engagement and Collaboration

The summit featured keynote addresses, parallel research presentations, hands-on workshops led by global technology partners such as Google for Education and AWS, and high-level discussions on AI policy and ethics. It also marked the inclusion of Timor Leste as ASEAN’s newest member, reinforcing regional cooperation in education, technology, and innovation.

Dr Farkhanda Afzal’s participation at the ASEAN Stakeholder Summit 2025 reflects NUST’s active international engagement and its continued commitment to advancing future-ready, inclusive, and responsible AI practices in higher education through global academic collaboration.
