In The Spotlights Grant of GBP 2.8 Million under the UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) Ayrton Challenge scheme

NUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (NUST-SEECS), in collaboration with Northumbria University, UK, has successfully secured a grant of GBP 2.8 Million under the UK Research & Innovation’s (UKRI) Ayrton Challenge scheme for the development of a Super-efficient Sustainable Cooling Solution for All Applications.
This initiative will be led by Dr. Wakil Shahzad (Northumbria University UK), Prof Dr Muhammad Moazam Fraz (NUST-SEECS), Prof Dr Marwa Elnahass (Newcastle University, UK), Prof Dr Sheng Dai (University of Leeds, UK). The team members from NUST SEECS are Dr Zuhair Zafar and Dr Seemab Latif. The S2Cool project is a pioneering initiative aimed at addressing the global challenge of energy-efficient cooling solutions. By leveraging innovative technology and AI-driven optimization, the project seeks to develop a low-cost, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly cooling system. A core component of the S2Cool project is the development of a novel Indirect Evaporative Cooler (NIEC) that utilizes the evaporative potential of water to provide cooling, eliminating the need for traditional refrigerants and compressors. This approach offers significant advantages in terms of energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and lower operational costs.

To optimize the performance of the NIEC system, the project will employ advanced AI frameworks. These AI-driven solutions will enable real-time monitoring, control, and optimization of the system, ensuring efficient operation under various climatic conditions. By integrating AI into the cooling system, the project aims to achieve significant energy savings and enhance overall system performance. By reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, the S2Cool project directly contributes to global climate action goals, particularly UN Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action. The S2Cool project has the potential to revolutionize the cooling industry, offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution for both residential and commercial applications.
