Dr Rafia Mumtaz received the Women of Wonders #WOW Award 2021

Dr Rafia Mumtaz, Assistant Professor at NUST School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science #SEECS, received the Women of Wonders #WOW Award 2021 for her valuable contributions in the field of Precision Agriculture.
Dr Rafia has secured national grants worth PKR 13 million and international grants amounting to GBP 19,000 in the field of Smart Agriculture. She has one design patent in this domain and has published five related research papers in the last two years, which have recent citations by more than 70 authors. Furthermore, she has forged strong collaborations, as a representative of NUST, with national organisations such as National Agriculture Research Council #NARC, Engro Fertilizers and Pakistan Agriculture Research Council #PARC.
Dr Rafia was conferred the award on March 04, 2021, at WOW Awards Ceremony organised by WOWPK ; an organisation working to highlight and acknowledge achievements by women, share resources to help them grow, and inspire young women to explore different careers. These awards are annually conferred upon Pakistani women for excellence in the categories of Art, Community Development/Pandemic & Crises, E-Commerce, Education, Health, Lifestyle & Beauty, Technology & Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Unconventional Business, Public Services, Food & Hospitality and Media.
NUST congratulates Dr Rafia for this honour and wishes her more success in the years to come!

Proposal Title: AIDPath – AI based Digital Pathology for precision cancer diagnostics

AIDPath is an AI-driven indigenous solution for cancer diagnosis and management by leveraging digital pathology. Using relatively low cost scanning hardware, tissue slides will be digitized and novel AI methods will be deployed for improving diagnostic reliability and efficiency. This project aims to provide an intelligent software to mainstream cancer hospitals & diagnostic labs, and as a service to the hospitals located in the remote areas of Pakistan that typically do not have qualified pathologists.

Proposal of Dr Rafia Mumtaz has been accepted for funding (PKR 9.447 million) under NCAI Research fund.

Included in World’s Top 2% Researchers

According to a database published by PLOS Biology, seven researchers from NUST are featured amongst the top 2% researchers worldwide by Citation Impact for the calendar year 2019. The research was published by a consortium of authors from #Stanford University #USA, SciTech Strategies USA, and Elsevier, The Netherlands, whereby they recently published updates to their lists of top 100,000 #researchers based on standardised citation indicators using the Scopus (Elsevier) database. The researchers are ranked according to a composite index created by the authors factoring in several bibliometrics including citations, hirsch-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, etc.

The seven researchers are from four different institutions of NUST and four different disciplines including #ArtificialIntelligence, #Telecommunications, #SignalProcessing and Mathematical Methods in Fluid Mechanics. The researchers are Dr Noreen Sher Akbar and Dr Usman Akram from the NUST College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering #CEME, Dr Meraj Mustafa Hashmi from the NUST School of Natural Sciences #SNS, Dr Faisal Shafait, Dr Muhammad Moazam Fraz and Dr Saad Bin Qaisar from the NUST School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences #SEECS and Dr Farooq Tahir from NUST Research Institute for Microwave & Millimeter-Wave Studies #RIMMS.

University Best Researcher Award for year 2019

Dr. Osman Hasan has been awarded the “University Best Researcher Award” for year 2019″. The nominations for this award were sought from all NUST Schools and Colleges and a NUST level Evaluation Committee (NEC) finalized the award. The criteria for this award mainly included the number of funded research projects, publications, and PG student supervisions during the year 2019.

Dr. Syed Ali Hassan, Associate Professor, has been declared the “SEECS Best Researcher” for the year 2019. The award is conferred because of his striking contributions in the field of telecommunications and next generation networks. Dr. Hassan is also the director of Information Processing and Transmissions Lab at SEECS and works mainly at the inter sectional areas of communications, signal processing and applied Maths.

Research project titled, “Capacity Building for Digital Health monitoring and Care Systems in Asia- DigiHealth-Asia” has been accepted for funding for a period of three years. The proposal was submitted to the Erasmus+ research grant program in Feb 2020. The total grant accepted is Euros 950092.00 where NUST share is around Euros 60,000. This is a collaborative project between Belgium, Pakistan, Thailand, and UK

Dr Muhammad Moazam Fraz is selected as the finalists of the British Council’s #UKAlumniAwards 2020 in Professional Achievement Award category, which recognises UK alumni who have distinguished themselves through exemplary leadership in their professional field. The award is given by Federal Minister of Education Mr Shafqat Mehmood at the British Council Pakistan. More information can be seen here and here.

The Study UK Alumni Awards 2019-20 recognise and celebrate the benefits that studying at a UK university has had upon the individual, their community and country. This year, more than 1,200 applications were received from alumni in more than 140 countries, representing alumni from more than 80 per cent of all UK higher education institutions.
