Prior to joining SEECS, Dr. Muhammad Usman Ilyas was a Post-doctoral Research Associate appointed jointly by the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) department and the Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) department at Michigan State University (MSU). He worked under the joint supervision of Dr. Hayder Radha (IEEE Fellow) and Dr. Alex Liu at East Lansing, MI. Dr. Ilyas received his Ph.D. and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University in 2009 and 2007, an MS in Computer Engineering from the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) at Lahore, Pakistan in 2004, and a BE (Honors) in Electrical Engineering from the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) at Rawalpindi, Pakistan in 1999.

His work experience as a researcher spans wireless communication & networking, statistical data analysis & modeling, graph theory, information theory, applied optimization, algorithms, and social networks. Dr. Ilyas has 4 years of experience working as a designer and developer and 10 years of programming experience in C/C++ and Matlab. During his doctoral studies he interned twice with Quartics LLC in Irvine, CA as an Embedded Software Engineer and assisted in the development of a video processor and spent a summer working with Microsoft Research’s (MSR) ConferenceXP group. Before joining MSU’s doctoral program Dr. Ilyas spent 2 years working as a Design Engineer on the system level design of a Voice over IP (VoIP) media gateway at the Islamabad development center of AVAZ Network, a startup based in Irvine, CA. Prior to that he worked as a Systems Engineer for Engro (Exxon) Chemical Pakistan Ltd.

He is a professional member of the IEEE and the ACM and regularly serves as member on technical program committees of conferences (IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE ICC, IEEE Globecom, IEEE WCNC).

Supervisors: Dr. Hayder Radha (IEEE Fellow) and Dr. Alex Liu.
Lead multiple research projects on online social network analysis based on a very large data set obtained from Yahoo! Labs.
Developed principal component centrality (PCC), a new measure of node centrality for multi-polar social networks with multiple communities.
Developed, implemented & tested a distributed algorithm for computing PCC that is privacy conserving for very large social networks.
