I'm the director of the Cognet lab which operates under the PTCL, Cisco, NUST IP technology center of excellence situated at SEECS, NUST. I'm also an Assistant Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department of SEECS, NUST since 2008.

I have research experience in wireless networks having worked in the area of routing in wireless mesh networks during my PhD studies under the supervision of Chun Tung Chou at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. Before my PhD studies, I worked actively in the networking industry for around 4 years where I gained hands-on experience working on the largest data networks in the country. Amongst other places, I have worked at PTCL’s Pakistan Internet Exchange (PIE) and at the national data networks of National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC).

I have completed my undergraduate degree from the Electrical Engineering department at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore in 2000.

Research Interest

I am broadly interested in computer networks and my specific research interest relates to cognitive radio networks in which machine learning techniques are applied to improve the performance of wireless networks.

Wireless networks have recently become very popular due to the flexibility they offer due to their untethered nature. However, despite its popularity, current wireless technologies are relatively inflexible since they cannot adapt to the environment to take autonomous decisions to optimize performance---in other words, the current wireless networks lack intelligence or cognitive ability.

In cognitive radio networks, each node is equipped with a radio that can 'think', i.e., it can intelligently adapt to the current operating conditions and adapt networking parameters to optimize performance. Cognitive radio networks is an exciting interdisciplinary domain which draws from the fields of networking, artificial intelligence, game theory, communications, systems theory, and mathematical optimization.
