Dr. Hammad Cheema received Bachelors in Electrical Engineering degree and was awarded President’s gold medal from College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (CEME), National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Rawalpindi, Pakistan in 2002. After a brief stay at Motorola in Lahore, Pakistan, he proceeded to Technical university of Denmark (DTU) in Lyngby, Denmark where he received MSc in Telecommunications in 2004. Dr. Cheema's master thesis, carried out at Danske Telecom, was related to dimensioning of fixed-wireless access networks. Dr. Hammad Cheema received PhD in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands in January 2010. His PhD research was related to integrated circuit design of phase locked loops and millimeter wave components for 60 GHz broadband wireless transceivers. He stayed at TU Eindhoven for another year as post-doctrate researcher and worked on modelling of interconnects between on-chip antennas and power amplifiers.
In 2011, Dr. Cheema joined the IMPACT Lab (impact.kaust.edu.sa) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia as a post-doctoral research fellow where he was involved in the design of a 60GHz transmitter chip including on-chip antenna and memory as well as a 24 GHz oscillator transmitter with integrated on-chip antenna. In addition, Dr. Cheema worked on flexible and printed electronics for low-cost inkjet printed applications using substrates such as paper and plastics. A paper-based wearable inkjet printed TAG for personnel tracking both indoors and outdoors was demonstrated in this research. 

Dr. Cheema has about 2 years of teaching experience at MCS and SEECS, NUST with courses related to electronic devices and electronic circuit design. 

Research Interest

Dr. Hammad Cheema's current research interests include CMOS millimeter-wave frequency synthesizers and their underlying components. This includes high-speed frequency dividers which at these frequencies are invariably based on injection locking. He is also interested in ‘smart’ circuits which based on different operating environments and conditions are able to adapt and thus optimize themselves based on performance metrics such as power consumption, linearity, phase accuracy, BER etc. Based on strong current trends of multimode and multi-standard applications and circuits, Dr. Cheema is also interested in reusability and flexibility of components and systems so that with minimum design overhead, they are able to cater for multiple applications.

The other research area which Dr. Hammad is currently focusing is printed electronics which has the potential of being the '3rd industrial revolution.' He is actively working on hybrid solutions combining sensors, chips and antennas on substrates such as paper and plastics for a wide variety of applications and producing the proof of concept devices for flexible and conformal electronics of the future. He is closely collaborating with IMPACT Lab in KAUST for fabrication and measurement support.
